300 years of intercultural dialogue as reflected in the Danish-Halle Mission and English-Halle Mission. This publication takes the anniversary in 2006 as an opportunity to trace the effects and consequences of the missions. The publication comprises three volumes.
Volume I: The Danish-Halle and the English-Halle Mission
The Protestant Mission in India began in the year 1706 with the arrival of two missionaries in Tranquebar. Out of that two mission enterprises – ecumenical and international by nature – develo-ped and lasted for more than hundred years: the Danish-Halle Mission in Tranquebar and the Eng-lish-Halle Mission. These Missions greatly influenced Protestant Indian Christianity. Volume I de-picts the historical background and context of the first Protestant Mission in India.
Volume II: Christian Mission in the Indian Context
Volume II focuses on the mission work in South India. It is not only the work of the missionaries that is taken into account, but also the roles oh the wives, the Indian co-workers and the Indian mem-bers of the congregations are explored. The relations and conflicts between the Lutheran mission and other Christian denominations are investigated. Finally, the relation between the missionaries and Hinduism is addressed.
Volume III: Communication between India and Europe
The cultural exchange between India and Europe took place in the fields of the natural scienc-es and medicine. The role of language in rural South India was also important for the devel-opment of the educational system in India. This volume also includes an appendix with sources of letters and early publications, short biographies and lists of missionaries.
