Wie Menschen streiten, bestimmen sie in konkreten Situationen selbst. Die erhitzte und als verroht empfundene Streitwelt in den Sozialen Medien unserer Tage besitzt eine lange Vorgeschichte. Ausgehend von der 300-jährigen Wiederkehr der Ausweisung des Philosophen Christian Wolff aus Halle im Jahre 1723 werden das 18. Jahrhundert und die Zeitgeschichte in Bezug gesetzt. Dabei ist es das Ziel der Publikation, das Thema Streit historisch und interdisziplinär an die Gegenwart heranzuführen und ihm eine Tiefenstruktur zu verleihen. Als Grundlage dient das Konzept der Invektivität. Damit werden Phänomene der Auseinandersetzung, Herabsetzung, Schmähung, Bloßstellung sowie die damit verbundene Anschlusskommunikation beschrieben. Viele Streitfelder – gestern wie heute – sind durch Beleidigungen und Provokationen charakterisiert. Sie sind Orte invektiver Handlungen und fordern Fragen nach den Folgewirkungen heraus. Die Publikation möchte zum Nachdenken und Diskutieren über das Streiten selbst sowie über Unterschiede und Verbindungslinien zwischen dem 18. Jahrhundert und heute einladen und anregen. Da Streit immer in einem räumlichen Bezug steht, sind die hier angesprochenen Streitthemen nach der Logik von Streitarenen organisiert – diese sind: Marktplatz, Universität, Hof, Screens, Sound Stage und Fußballstadion.

How people argue is something they decide for themselves in specific situations. The heated and seemingly brutal world of arguments on social media today has a long history. Based on the 300th anniversary of the expulsion of the philosopher Christian Wolff from Halle in 1723, the 18th century and contemporary history are placed in relation to each other. The aim of the publication is to approach the topic of conflict from a historical and interdisciplinary perspective and to give it a deeper structure. The concept of invectivity serves as the basis for this. It is used to describe phenomena of confrontation, disparagement, abuse, exposure and the associated follow-up communication. Many areas of conflict – yesterday as today – are characterised by insults and provocations. They are places of invective actions and raise questions about the consequences. The publication aims to invite and encourage reflection and discussion about conflict itself, as well as about the differences and connections between the 18th century and today. Since conflict always has a spatial dimension, the topics addressed here are organised according to the logic of arenas of conflict – these are: the marketplace, the university, the court, screens, the sound stage and the football stadium.
