Interdisciplinary research into the history of the Francke Foundations from the 17th to the 20th century is part of the Foundations' mission and self-image as a cultural institution engaged in research and education.
The Research Department develops scientific strategic plans and research projects and serves as a central point of contact for regional, national, and international partners and institutions. It also designs concepts for the Francke Foundations’ annual exhibitions and organises conferences and workshops. A particular focus is placed on supporting early-career researchers and fostering the professional development of emerging scholars.
The Research Department is engaged in a wide range of scholarly projects aimed at researching, preserving, and promoting the Foundation’s historical heritage on an international scale. It conducts externally funded research projects, collaborates closely with renowned national and international partners and institutions, and continuously develops its own innovative research initiatives.

The department develops exhibition projects based on current research, which it realises in close collaboration with the Curatorship and the Education Department of the Francke Foundations, as well as with external experts. These projects combine rigorous scholarly foundations with engaging presentation, making historical collections and research findings accessible to a wide audience.

Thanks to a foundation from Dr Liselotte Kirchner, the Francke Foundations offer three-month research fellowships for researchers and postdocs to use the collections in the Study Centre’s library and archive
The department maintains close cooperation with local partners and institutions and organises joint events several times a year to promote scholarly exchange. These events provide a platform to discuss current research, present innovative projects, and strengthen networks among researchers, students, and other interested parties.
The Science Department is affiliated with the Institute of History at Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg. View the current work here.
