Pietism depended on the establishment and use of media in order to formulate and communicate its claim to validity. In addition to local representatives, it also needed mobile and flexible intermediaries operating worldwide to spread its message and achieve its desired effect. Pietism as a special media and communication phenomenon is explored here in six thematic areas: human media, material media, institutions as media, media practices and media techniques, media functions and media effects, and media conditions. Whereas research to date has focused primarily on questions concerning the characteristics and peculiarities of Pietism in terms of its origins and impact, programme and objectives, this study looks at the types and modes, strategies and ways in which it was articulated and popularised, as well as its local and ultimately global implementation.
This book contains contributions in German and English.
