The question of the development of dedicated school architecture has so far been linked to European modernism by historical education research and architectural history. According to the currently dominant narrative, it was only through the Enlightenment and the emergence of the modern European state that the development towards spaces intentionally planned and used for educational purposes became possible.
This volume fundamentally challenges this narrative with new findings and research approaches. Taking into account interdisciplinary perspectives and using internationally selected examples, it shows that even before the epochal change around 1800, various building forms existed that served explicitly educational purposes. The conscious connection between space and educational concept was already known in the early modern period and led to diverse forms of expression shaped by culture and religion.
With this new perspective on the topic of school architecture, which remains significant in terms of educational, social policy and cultural issues to this day, this volume aims to contribute to opening up research to pre-modern, intercultural, interdisciplinary and internationally comparative perspectives.

This book contains contributions in German and English.
