Freiheit, Fortschritt und Verheißung

Der nordamerikanische Halbkontinent war in der frühen Neuzeit nicht nur geografischer Raum, der von den Europäern nach und nach erschlossen wurde, sondern genauso Projektionsfläche für europäische Ängste und Sehnsüchte. Beide Aspekte dieses transatlantischen Verhältnisses stellt der Katalog in elf Essays dar. Anlass für die kulturgeschichtliche Ausstellung und den Katalog ist der Geburtstag Heinrich Melchior Mühlenbergs (1711–1787), der sich 2011 zum dreihundertsten Mal jährt. Mühlenberg, der Begründer der lutherischen Kirche in Nordamerika, war 1742 von Gotthilf August Francke (1696–1769) von Halle aus zur Gemeindearbeit nach Amerika entsandt worden. 

In the early modern period, the North American subcontinent was not only a geographical area that was gradually being explored by Europeans, but also a projection screen for European fears and desires. The catalogue presents both aspects of this transatlantic relationship in eleven essays. The occasion for the cultural history exhibition and catalogue is the 300th anniversary of the birth of Heinrich Melchior Mühlenberg (1711–1787) in 2011. Mühlenberg, the founder of the Lutheran Church in North America, was sent to America in 1742 by Gotthilf August Francke (1696–1769) from Halle to do community work.
