Die Beiträge dieses Bandes erforschen in interdisziplinärer kulturwissenschaftlicher Perspektive die Bedeutung des lutherischen Kirchenliedes als Vermittlungsinstanz zwischen Kirche und Schule. Dabei richtet sich der Blick insbesondere auf die Verbindungen zwischen der Schul- und Sozialgeschichte sowie der Musik- und Kulturgeschichte. Untersucht werden Schulstruktur, Bildungskanon, Zusammensetzung der Schülerschaft mit ihren im Tagesablauf enthaltenen musikalischen Aufgaben, das Repertoire von Kantoreien und Kurrenden sowie Ausbildung und Berufsstand der Kantoren als Lehrer und Organisatoren kirchlicher Musik wie auch die Aufgaben der Organisten. Darüber hinaus wird die Perspektive auch in das 19. und 20. Jahrhundert hinein punktuell geöffnet, um die künstlerische Auseinandersetzung mit dem Phänomen des Lutherischen Chorals in Oper und Konzertmusik zu beleuchten.

The contributions in this volume explore the significance of Lutheran hymns as a mediating factor between church and school from an interdisciplinary cultural studies perspective. In doing so, they focus in particular on the connections between school and social history as well as music and cultural history. The studies examine school structure, the educational canon, the composition of the student body with its daily musical tasks, the repertoire of choirs and carol singers, the training and profession of cantors as teachers and organisers of church music, and the tasks of organists. In addition, the perspective is also opened up selectively to the 19th and 20th centuries in order to shed light on the artistic engagement with the phenomenon of the Lutheran chorale in opera and concert music.
