Mit dem »Collegium Orientale Theologicum« begründete August Hermann Francke (1663–1727) ein wissenschaftliches Institut für Lehre und Forschung, in welchem zwölf ausgewählte Theologiestudenten für mindestens vier Jahre eine umfassende theologische Ausbildung erhielten. Im Mittelpunkt ihrer Arbeit stand die Auslegung der Heiligen Schrift und die textkritische Herausgabe der hebräischen Bibel. In dieser Schrift, die aus drei vorhergehenden Entwürfen entstanden ist, welche in einem Handschriftenkonvolut im Archiv der Franckeschen Stiftungen zusammengefasst sind, legt Francke in 20 Punkten verbindlich Zweck und Aufgaben des Instituts dar.

With the »Collegium Orientale Theologicum,« August Hermann Francke (1663–1727) founded a scientific institute for teaching and research, in which twelve selected theology students received comprehensive theological training for at least four years. Their work focused on the interpretation of the Bible and the critical edition of the Hebrew Bible. In this document, which is based on three previous drafts compiled in a collection of manuscripts in the archives of the Francke Foundations, Francke sets out the purpose and tasks of the institute in 20 binding points.
