Um 1700 verließen die Theologen und Pädagogen August Hermann Francke (1663–1727) und Christoph Semler (1669–1740) die ausgetretenen Pfade der Schul- und Erziehungsmethoden ihrer Zeit und gründeten in Halle neuartige Schulen mit wegweisenden Konzepten. Im Unterricht mit Realien, also den wirklichen Dingen, verbanden sie erstmals systematisch dreidimensionale Lehrmittel wie Modelle und optische Instrumente mit neuen Vermittlungspraktiken und lebensnahen Themen aus Natur und Technik, um zeitgemäßes Wissen praxisorientiert und leicht verständlich zu vermitteln.
Dieser einzigartigen Anschaulichkeitsoffensive widmet sich der historische Teil des Ausstellungskataloges und blickt dabei auf frühneuzeitliche Wegbereiter der Anschaulichkeitsidee, historische Lehrmodelle, die Vermittlung von Handfertigkeiten sowie Lernorte der Franckeschen Stiftungen in der ersten Hälfte des 18. Jahrhunderts. Vertreter:innen aus Lernpsychologie, Technikdidaktik und Germanistik führen das Thema zurück in unsere Gegenwart und diskutieren aus unterschiedlichen Perspektiven, welche Rolle Anschaulichkeit – angesichts von Digitalisierung, Virtualisierung und maschinellem Lernen – heute und in Zukunft spielen soll.

Around 1700, theologians and educators August Hermann Francke (1663–1727) and Christoph Semler (1669–1740) departed from the well-trodden paths of the school and educational methods of their time and founded innovative schools in Halle with groundbreaking concepts. In their lessons using realia, i.e. real objects, they were the first to systematically combine three-dimensional teaching aids such as models and optical instruments with new teaching practices and realistic topics from nature and technology in order to convey contemporary knowledge in a practical and easily understandable way.
The historical section of the exhibition catalogue is dedicated to this unique campaign for clarity, looking at early modern pioneers of the idea of clarity, historical teaching models, the teaching of manual skills and places of learning at the Francke Foundations in the first half of the 18th century. Representatives from the fields of learning psychology, technology didactics and German studies bring the topic back to the present day and discuss from different perspectives what role clarity should play today and in the future in the face of digitalisation, virtualisation and machine learning.
