Sivaismus im Wandel

Ausgangspunkt dieser Untersuchung über die philosophische Tradition des Saiva Siddhanta ist eine ethnographisch-philologische Analyse von dessen tamilischen Ausprägungen und der Lehren ihrer einflussreichsten Wortführer zu Beginn des 21. Jahrhunderts. Seit den 1990er Jahren werden die philosophischen Lehren durch eine eigene populäre Organisation, ausgehend vom bedeutendsten monastisch-orthodoxen Zentrum des tamilischen Saiva Siddhanta, dem Thiruvavaduthurai Adhinam, verbreitet.
Die Untersuchung verfolgt dieses gegenwärtige Verständnis der tamilisch-sivaitischen Philosophie historisch bis in die Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts zurück. Dabei wird deutlich, dass die Konzeption des Saiva Siddhanta um 1900 einschneidende Brüche erfahren hat und sich daraus bis heute einflussreiche Namensgebungen entwickelt haben. Es wird also gezeigt, dass der tamilische Saiva Siddhanta mit seinen philosophischen Grundannahmen und literarischen Kanones das Ergebnis einer globalen Verflechtungsgeschichte darstellt, die von tamilischen Gelehrten, sivaitischen Reformern, christlichen Missionaren und europäischen Orientalisten gemeinsam geprägt wurde.

The starting point of this study of the philosophical tradition of Saiva Siddhanta is an ethnographic-philological analysis of its Tamil manifestations and the teachings of its most influential spokesmen at the beginning of the 21st century. Since the 1990s, the philosophical teachings have been disseminated by a dedicated popular organization, emanating from the most important monastic-orthodox center of Tamil Saiva Siddhanta, the Thiruvavaduthurai Adhinam.
The study traces this current understanding of Tamil-Sivaite philosophy back historically to the mid-19th century. It becomes clear that the concept of Saiva Siddhanta experienced radical changes around 1900, and that influential naming conventions have evolved from this to the present day. It is thus shown that the Tamil Saiva Siddhanta with its philosophical assumptions and literary canons is the result of a global history of interweaving, which was jointly shaped by Tamil scholars, Siiva reformers, Christian missionaries and European orientalists.
