Pietismus und Adel

Fragen nach der Geschlechterordnung, Handlungsräumen und Selbstentwürfen im pietistisch geprägten Adel sind neu und bislang kaum systematisch bearbeitet worden. Der vorliegende Band versammelt Beiträge zur historischen Genderforschung, die den gegenwärtigen Forschungshorizont umreißen und um eine Perspektive auf Praktiken und Performativität erweitern. Gender als eine soziale und kulturelle Konstruktion beeinflusst pietistische Frömmigkeit, die wiederum in ihren unterschiedlichen Ausformungen nicht nur die religiösen Handlungsfelder Adliger um 1700 neu gestaltet, sondern auch Impulse zu gewandelten Identitätskonzepten, herrschaftlichem Handeln sowie dessen kultureller Repräsentation und Performanz verleiht. Zugleich verstärkt die Amalgamierung von Regierungshandeln und Reform die Ausbreitung pietistischer Ideen. Die genderhistorischen Analysen gewähren neue Einblicke in die Verbindung von Geschlechtskonzepten, pietistischer Frömmigkeit und Adligkeit als Stand sowie Habitus als historisch produktivem gesellschaftlichen Prozess.

Questions concerning gender order, spheres of action and self-concepts among the pietistic nobility are new and have hardly been systematically addressed to date. This volume brings together contributions to historical gender research that outline the current research horizon and expand it to include a perspective on practices and performativity. Gender as a social and cultural construct influences Pietist piety, which in turn, in its various forms, not only reshapes the religious spheres of activity of the nobility around 1700, but also provides impetus for changed concepts of identity, lordly behaviour and its cultural representation and performance. At the same time, the amalgamation of governmental action and reform reinforced the spread of Pietist ideas. Gender-historical analyses provide new insights into the connection between concepts of gender, Pietist piety and nobility as a social class and habitus as a historically productive social process.
