»Modell« Waisenhaus?

The listed buildings of the Francke Foundations have been on the tentative list for UNESCO World Heritage status since 1998. The history of these unique buildings has become an exciting field of research in recent years. Two major cultural history exhibitions organised by the Francke Foundations, accompanied by scholarly catalogues, have focused on the construction and architectural history of this remarkable complex
(2010: Gebaute Utopien, ISBN 978-3-447-06336-4; 2015: strong roots – inspiring vision. The Francke Foundations as Social and Educational Architecture in the Protestant Baroque, ISBN 978-3-447-10458-6).
The aim of this publication is to broaden the perspective through comparison: new scientific findings should contribute to further mapping the still largely uncharted territory of pre-modern European social, welfare and educational architecture, despite recent efforts. Therefore, it was important to focus on and re-examine the interdisciplinary aspects of welfare architecture in particular at the conference underlying this publication, ›The Other Side of the Baroque – Social Welfare and Educational Buildings in the 17th and 18th Centuries‹.
This volume takes this concern into account: in the fields of cultural, architectural, social and religious history, new findings and theses on established research opinions on the architectural and cultural history of the 17th and 18th centuries are related to each other and discussed, and perspectives for future research are formulated. The term ›model‹ is therefore chosen to describe the built reality of Halle Pietism, in which material and immaterial cultural heritage merge in a spectacular and meaningful way: the ›model orphanage‹, according to the thesis of this volume, formulated through its design a claim to originality that was to be recognisably different and at the same time set new standards. Numerous illustrations and an index of people and places illustrate, contextualise and open up the volume.
