The songs composed during the Reformation continue to have a far-reaching cultural and historical impact to this day. This interdisciplinary volume, with contributions from the fields of theology, musicology and literary studies, is devoted to the history of their reception from the Reformation period itself into the 19th century. It traces the influence of Reformation songs on cultural, musical and religious history, not only in Germany, but also in Switzerland, Scandinavia, Eastern European countries and even North America. The topics range from the analysis of individual songs under the aforementioned aspect to descriptions of hymnbook affiliations, aspects of popular piety and regional church history, and an examination of past Reformation anniversaries.
