The essays in this anthology focus on the interactions between missionary work and research in southern India in the 18th and 19th centuries. Using the example of the Danish-Halle Mission, which began in Tranquebar (now Tharangambadi) in 1706 with the arrival of the missionary Bartholomäus Ziegenbalg (1682–1719), the authors attempt to show the contributions made by the missionaries and their Tamil informants and collaborators to the study of languages and religiosity, society and culture, as well as medicine and nature in South India for individual scientific disciplines, how they significantly influenced the transfer of knowledge between Europe and India, and thus contributed to a changing view of the non-European world in the 18th century.
This book contains contributions in German and English.
