Seit jeher zählen Steine, Minerale und Fossilien zu den faszinierendsten Sammlerobjekten. Ihrer erdgeschichtlichen Erforschung und Deutung widmen sich Ausstellung und Katalog, die erstmals auch die Geschichte der Geologie in den Blick nehmen. Im Zentrum steht die Zeit um 1800, in der sich das immer komplexer werdende Wissen über die Vorgänge auf und unter der Erdoberfläche zu einer revolutionären Erkenntnis verdichtet: der ›Entdeckung der Zeit‹. Der Katalog lässt die außergewöhnliche Schönheit von Steinen bestaunen und den aufregenden Beginn einer neuen Wissenschaft miterleben. In diesem Zusammenhang wird auch das Verhältnis von Naturwissenschaft und Theologie beleuchtet. In Wunderkammern finden sich vermeintliche Zeugen einer vorsintflutlichen Zeit, während Forschungsreisende in schaurigschönen Bergwelten bahnbrechende geologische Entdeckungen machen. Der reich bebilderte Katalog zeigt eindrucksvolle Minerale, Gesteine und Fossilien, ebenso seltene geologische Karten und historische Forschungsinstrumente, Prachtausgaben geologischer Standardwerke sowie wertvolle Handschriften u.a. von Goethe und Alexander von Humboldt. Mit einem Beitrag zum Begriff Anthropozän – dem Zeitalter, in dem der Mensch selbst zu einem bedeutenden geologischen Einflussfaktor geworden ist – schlägt der Katalog einen Bogen in die Gegenwart und fragt nach den Konsequenzen unseres Denkens und Handelns für den Planeten Erde.

Stones, minerals and fossils have always been among the most fascinating collector's items. The exhibition and catalogue are dedicated to their geological research and interpretation, focusing for the first time on the history of geology. The focus is on the period around 1800, when the increasingly complex knowledge about the processes on and below the Earth's surface culminated in a revolutionary discovery: the »discovery of time«. The catalogue allows readers to marvel at the extraordinary beauty of stones and witness the exciting beginnings of a new science. In this context, the relationship between natural science and theology is also examined. Curiosity cabinets contain supposed witnesses of a pre-flood era, while explorers make groundbreaking geological discoveries in eerily beautiful mountain worlds. The richly illustrated catalogue shows impressive minerals, rocks and fossils, as well as rare geological maps and historical research instruments, magnificent editions of standard geological works and valuable manuscripts by Goethe and Alexander von Humboldt, among others. With a contribution on the concept of the Anthropocene – the age in which humans themselves have become a significant geological factor – the catalogue draws a line to the present and asks about the consequences of our thoughts and actions for planet Earth.
