Goethe und der Pietismus

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832) war kein Pietist, interessierte sich aber – vermittelt durch sein biographisches Umfeld – für radikalpietistisches Gedankengut, in dem Mystik und Hermetik (Alchemie) eine wichtige Rolle spielten. In dieser Begegnung entwickelten sich Religiosität und Weltbild des jungen Goethe. Der vorliegende Tagungsband mit Beiträgen von Theologen, Germanisten und Historikern rekonstruiert diese von der Forschung vernachlässigten Zusammenhänge in Goethes Biographie und Werk.

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832) was not a Pietist, but through his biographical environment he became interested in radical Pietist ideas, in which mysticism and hermeticism (alchemy) played an important role. This encounter shaped the young Goethe's religiosity and worldview. This conference volume, with contributions from theologians, Germanists, and historians, reconstructs these connections in Goethe's biography and work, which have not yet been taken into account by research.
