As part of the celebrations marking the 350th anniversary of the birth of August Hermann Francke (1663–1727) in 2013, the international art exhibition »Certainty. Vision. Francke today« took place from 22 September 2013 to 23 March 2014. Internationally active artists such as Adela Babanova, Marc Bijl, Sergey Bratkov, Esther Ernst, Christian Jankowski, Via Lewandowsky, Gabriel Machemer, Christian Niccoli, Serkan Özkayan and el Seed have engaged with Francke's ideas and concrete legacy and developed artistic works on the basic concepts of the anniversary year, ›Certainty‹ and ›Vision‹.

The bilingual catalogue accompanying this exhibition presents the artists and their works. The diverse works are contextualised and commented on in the form of short accompanying texts, photographs and texts by the artists themselves. The exhibition and catalogue also feature eight interviews in which experts from various disciplines offer their highly subjective perspectives on the exhibition theme. Drawing on their individual experiences, they explore the meanings of the terms certainty and vision and discuss their productive potential. The catalogue is thus both a documentation and accompanying information to the exhibition, but also a stand-alone book of texts and images that invites readers to engage with the artistic works and texts and the associated themes.
