Fromme Gefühle

Eine seelische Erschütterung und eine intensive innere, durch die Gnade Gottes gewirkte Glaubenserfahrung waren zentral für das Selbstverständnis einer Gruppe von Gläubigen, die sich im 17. und 18. Jahrhundert einer neuen protestantischen Frömmigkeitsbewegung, dem Pietismus, anschlossen. Diese Publikation stellt den Versuch dar, anhand ausgewählter Texte und Abbildungen aus Büchern des vor allem hallischen Pietismus aufzuzeigen, wie den Gläubigen dieses im Grunde unzugängliche emotionale Erlebnis vermittelt wurde, um Handlungsimpulse freizusetzen, die auf eine im Alltag gelebte aktive Frömmigkeit, eine praxis pietatis, zielten. Die fünf Kapitel in dieser Publikation orientieren sich sowohl an emotionsgeschichtlich zu befragenden Paradigmen des Pietismus – Buße und Bekehrung sowie Herzensfrömmigkeit – als auch an zentralen methodischen Zugängen der historischen Emotionsforschung, die für die Interpretation der Quellen des Pietismus produktiv gemacht werden können: die Normierung und Regulierung, die Performativität und die gemeinschaftsfördernde Rolle von Gefühlen.

An emotional upheaval and an intense inner experience of faith brought about by the grace of God were central to the self-image of a group of believers who joined a new Protestant piety movement, Pietism, in the 17th and 18th centuries. This publication attempts to use selected texts and illustrations from books on Pietism, particularly in Halle, to show how this essentially inaccessible emotional experience was conveyed to believers in order to trigger impulses for action aimed at active piety in everyday life, a praxis pietatis. The five chapters in this publication are based both on paradigms of Pietism that can be examined in terms of the history of emotions – repentance and conversion as well as piety of the heart – and on central methodological approaches of historical emotion research that can be made productive for the interpretation of the sources of Pietism: the standardisation and regulation, the performativity and the community-promoting role of emotions.
