Die Oratorische Bibliothek des Königlichen Pädagogiums zu Halle

Eine rhetorische Ausbildung war an den Gelehrtenschulen in der Frühen Neuzeit ein wichtiges Unterrichtsziel. In den Franckeschen Stiftungen bildete der oratorische Unterricht am Königlichen Pädagogium ein Alleinstellungsmerkmal unter den hier verorteten Schulen. Mit der Übernahme der Leitung des Pädagogiums 1784 durch August Hermann Niemeyer (1754–1828) wurde die zeitgenössische deutsche Literatur zu einem wichtigen Bestandteil des oratorischen Unterrichts. In seinem pädagogischen Handbuch Grundsätze der Erziehung und des Unterrichts forderte er die Einrichtung von Schulbibliotheken an allen Schulen Preußens. Die erste, den Stiftungsschülern zugängliche Bibliothek war die Oratorische Bibliothek des Pädagogiums. Als diese Bibliothek 1902 aufgelöst wurde kam mehr als die Hälfte ihres Bestandes in die sogenannte Hauptbibliothek, wie die Bibliothek des Waisenhauses zu dieser Zeit genannte wurde. Auf der Grundlage der heute noch in der Bibliothek der Franckeschen Stiftungen physisch vorhandenen 1.094 Titel aus dem ehemaligen Bestand der Oratorischen Bibliothek sowie der beiden erhalten gebliebenen Bibliothekskataloge und des Auflösungsverzeichnisses wurde eine Rekonstruktion des Gesamtbestandes vorgenommen, der um 1865 mehr als 2.750 Titel umfasste. So beleuchtet die Broschüre kurz den oratorischen Unterricht am Königlichen Pädagogium, führt in die Geschichte und die Anschaffungspraxis dieser besonderen Bibliothek ein, um dann anhand des einzigen gedruckten Bibliothekskatalogs von 1838 eine Bestandsanalyse vorzunehmen und die Nutzung der Bibliothek vorzustellen.

Rhetorical training was an important teaching objective at grammar schools in the early modern period. At the Francke Foundations, oratory lessons at the Royal Pedagogium were a unique feature among the schools located here. When August Hermann Niemeyer (1754–1828) took over the management of the Pädagogium in 1784, contemporary German literature became an important part of oratory lessons. In his educational handbook Grundsätze der Erziehung und des Unterrichts (Principles of Education and Teaching), he called for the establishment of school libraries in all schools in Prussia. The first library accessible to the foundation's pupils was the Oratorical Library of the Pädagogium. When this library was dissolved in 1902, more than half of its holdings were transferred to the so-called Main Library, as the orphanage library was called at the time. Based on the 1,094 titles from the former holdings of the Oratorical Library that are still physically present in the library of the Francke Foundations today, as well as the two surviving library catalogues and the dissolution list, a reconstruction of the total holdings was carried out, which comprised more than 2,750 titles around 1865.
The brochure briefly highlights the oratory lessons at the Royal Pedagogium, introduces the history and acquisition practices of this special library, and then uses the only printed library catalogue from 1838 to analyse the holdings and present how the library was used.
