Die Geschichte früher protestantischer Missionen wird noch immer vorrangig aus der Perspektive der europäischen Missionare erforscht. Im Unterschied dazu stehen im vorliegenden Band die lokalen Mitarbeiter der Dänisch-Englisch-Halleschen Mission im 18. und in den ersten Jahrzehnten des 19. Jahrhunderts in Südindien im Mittelpunkt. Erstmals wird ein umfassendes Bild dieser religiös-kulturellen Mittlergruppe gezeichnet, die sowohl die missionarische Tätigkeit als auch ihr gesellschaftliches Umfeld im frühkolonialen Indien aktiv mitgestaltete.

The history of early Protestant missions is still primarily researched from the perspective of European missionaries. In contrast, this volume focuses on the local employees of the Danish-English-Halle Mission in South India in the 18th century and the first decades of the 19th century. For the first time, a comprehensive picture is painted of this religious and cultural intermediary group, which actively shaped both missionary activity and its social environment in early colonial India.
