Diese Auswahl biblischer Texte soll weder einen repräsentativen Querschnitt durch die Bibel, noch einen Überblick über sie darstellen. Vielmehr will sie dazu anregen, das Buch der Bücher selbst zu lesen, obwohl oder gerade weil die Aussagen der Bibel für Menschen in der säkularisierten Welt des 20. und 21. Jahrhunderts nicht immer leicht zu verstehen sind. Die Auswahl der Texte folgt dem biblischen Kanon, der mit der Erschaffung der Welt im 1. Buch Mose beginnt und in der Offenbarung des Johannes, in der Verheißung eines neuen Himmels und einer neuen Erde, seinen Abschluss findet. In diesen Rahmen sind Texte des Alten und des Neuen Testaments gestellt. Im Mittelpunkt der Texte des Alten Testaments steht Israels Geschichte als von Gott auserwähltem Volk, die Texte des Neuen Testaments stellen die Geschichte von Jesus von Nazareth in den Fokus.

This selection of biblical texts is not intended to represent a cross-section of the Bible, nor is it intended to provide an overview of it. Rather, it is intended to encourage readers to read the Book of Books themselves, even though, or perhaps precisely because, the messages of the Bible are not always easy for people in the secularised world of the 20th and 21st century to understand. The selection of texts follows the biblical canon, which begins with the creation of the world in Genesis and ends with the Revelation of John, in the promise of a new heaven and a new earth. Texts from the Old and New Testaments are placed within this framework. The Old Testament focuses on the history of Israel as God's chosen people, while the New Testament centres on the story of Jesus of Nazareth.
