Rescuing books and archival documents

Individual persons, companies and associations can »adopt« a manuscript or book, i.e. cover the costs of completely restoring a book or a manuscript. After completion of the restoration you will receive a description of the item along with a detailed restoration report including photographs. an entry your can be into the restored item. Upon request an entry documenting your donation can be includedinto the restored item. If you are interested in adopting a book, please contact the head of the Study Centre.

Description
When he took office in 1692, A. H. Francke found terrible conditions in his new parish of Glaucha. Striving with all his might to improve the situation, he formulated his principles for parish reform in this »Glauchisches Gedenck-Büchlein« (Glaucha Memorial Booklet)..
Damages
The book block of this work is still untrimmed. It was only given a temporary and very thin, non-acid-free cardboard cover, the lid of which has come loose from the binding.
Restoration measures
The temporary binding will be removed, the paper will be re-stitched, and a new half-leather binding with coloured paper will be made.

Description
Gotthilf August Francke (1696–1769), the son of August Hermann Francke, published theological treatises and articles on church history in the »Wöchentliche hallische Anzeigen« from 1746 onwards, which have been compiled and published in this volume.
Damages
The entire spine is missing, so both covers are loose.
Restoration measures
The volume will be cleaned and given a new leather spine so that the covers can be reattached to the spine.

Description
This small anthology contains three writings commemorating the 75th anniversary of the Canstein Bible Institute in 1785.
Damages
The cover, made of historic coloured paper, known as brocade paper, is damaged in the spine area and has some missing sections. Some pages have been torn out of the binding.
Restoration measures
The volume will be cleaned and the loose leaves reattached to the binding. The spine will be reinforced with new paper and the remains of the historic coloured paper will be mounted on top of it.

Description
G. A. Freylinghausen (1670–1739), son-in-law of A. H. Francke and his successor as director of the orphanages, wrote this theological textbook for secondary school pupils and teachers. Between 1703 and 1774, it appeared in numerous editions published by the orphanage.
Damages
The binding, a half-parchment binding with coloured paper (Kiebitzpapier), is damaged in the area of the spine. In the area of the signature label, the parchment has almost completely detached and has missing sections.
Restoration measures
The volume will be cleaned and the loose leaves reattached to the binding. The spine will be lined with new parchment and the remains of the historical parchment will be mounted on top of it.

Description
The pietistic pastor Christoph Albrecht Lösecke (1676–1753) wrote numerous catechetical works, which were published by the orphanage's publishing house.
Damages
The cover, made of coloured paper from Kiebitzpapier, is damaged on the spine and has some missing parts.

The volume will be cleaned, the paper on the spine removed and the missing sections replaced with new paper.

Description
A. H. Francke (1663–1727) saw his role as a professor as guiding students towards an appropriate approach to their studies and life in general. The lectures given as part of this course (Collegium Paraeneticum) were transcribed by students and later published by the Publishing House of the Orphanage.
Damages
The binding is defective and the 19th-century cover has already come apart. The endpapers are made of acidic paper.
Restoration measures
The old cover will be removed, the binding renewed and a new cover made from paste paper.

Description
J. A. Freylinghausen (1670–1739) made a particularly significant contribution to the field of hymnology. The »Geistreiche Gesangbuch« (Witty Hymn Book) he compiled contains 1,500 songs and was published in numerous editions by the Waisenhaus publishing house until well into the 19th century.
Damages
Due to intensive use of the extensive hymn book, the cover is badly damaged. The leather on the spine is badly worn, the binding is already coming apart and both covers have detached.

Production of a new cover made of brown calfskin.

Description
Johann Georg Knapp (1705–1771) was director of the orphanages from 1769 to 1771. This memorial publication on the death of Knapp, edited by his successor Gottlieb Anastasius Freylinghausen (1719–1785), contains a eulogy delivered at the funeral service, his curriculum vitae, and other writings of mourning and consolation.
Damages
The cardboard cover, covered with simple blue paste paper, is worn and scuffed due to heavy use, and the spine has already come loose.
Restoration measures
The volume will be cleaned, the cover removed and the missing sections on the spine replaced with new paper.
